The Happy Invention: The Documentary Value of Picture Postcards with Katherine Hamilton-Smith
September 24, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The Library is hosting this presentation in partnership with the Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Speakers Bureau.
Katherine Hamilton-Smith, founding curator of the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, will present “The Happy Invention: the Documentary Value of Picture Postcards.” The first picture postcards were published for the 1889 Paris Exposition, celebrating the completion of the Eiffel Tower. In America, the first picture postcards were printed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago – making Illinois the birthplace of the American picture postcard. Hamilton-Smith will discuss the documentary power and significance of picture postcards. Audience members are encouraged to bring their postcards. Hamilton-Smith will comment broadly on rarity and the value of everything curious or unusual. No library card required. Please register by calling 815-538-5142.
